GLONASS will catch up with the GPS for accuracy by 2015

Specialists of the General staff of the Russian Federation expects that Russian system of global positioning GLONASS will catch up with the GPS for accuracy by 2015. This happens due to the developed in the Russian space geodetic system, announced the head of the military topographic Directorate of the General staff of the armed forces (VTU GSH VS) kontr-Admiral Sergey Kozlov.

Russian space geodetic system will consist of three segments: ground points of observation, control and information processing (the first segment), high-orbit satellite constellation of GLONASS (the second segment) and the third — until the missing segment between two medium-altitude earth orbit geodetic apparatus geo-IK-2 on a sun-synchronous orbit with an altitude of about 1000 km.

SKA geo-IK-2 equipped with high-precision altimeter "Sadko" produced by Thales Alenia Space (France) and satellite navigation designed for measurements in line SKA-VKA. The presence of measurement lines SKA-VKA is a fundamentally new element, which will be greatly enhanced the accuracy of the GLONASS system.

Work on the launch of SKA geo-IK-2 are performed by the specialists of military topographic Directorate of the General staff of the Russian Federation at the expense of the defense budget. These costs are written in a separate line in the Federal target program "global navigation system (2011-2020)".

The first of two satellites geo-IK-2 was launched on 1 February 2011, but failed due to errors in the operation of the booster unit is in a circular orbit 1000 km the unit went into an elliptical orbit with an altitude of 369 to 1021 km. the Satellite would translate into the proper orbit, but it was not enough fuel. A month after the launch of the satellite lost.
